BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

The Indian Accounting Association Research Foundation (hereinafter referred to as "the Foundation") is a not-for-profit accounting organization headquartered in Kolkata.
It was founded during 1989-90 as a registered body under the Societies Registration Act (West Bengal Act XXXVI) of 1961 (Regn. No. S/63876 of 1989-90), Late Prof Sukumar Bhattacharyya was the Founder President.

 

THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES OF THE FOUNDATION.
The principal objectives of Indian Accounting Association Research Foundation are enumerated below
To promote fundamental and applied research in accounting and allied subjects, To sponsor research projects.
To hold seminars, symposia, conferences, workshops, etc. To publish research journals, books and monographs
To co-ordinate with other professional accounting bodies, universities and institutions in the matter of creation and dissemination of knowledge in accounting and related subjects.
FOUNDATION'S JOURNAL

Indian Accounting Review (a bi-annual refered international journal : ISSN 0972-1754). The Foundation organizes from time to time Executive Development Programmes (EDP) for the benefit of persons doing managerial jobs in companies and other establishments. One such EDP was held in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta.

CONFERENCES AND MDPs

During the short time span of about 24 years, the Foundation has successfully organized 11 international conferences, 5 management development programes and a good number of national and regional level conferences, seminars and symposia.The 12th International Accounting Conference is going to deliberate on many key issues currently confronting the economy and the accounting profession.

Management of the Foundation

The day-to day management of the Foundation is vested in an executive committee the members of which are elected at the annual general meeting for a period of 4 years.

Outstanding Accounting Researcher Award

From 2011-12, IAA Research Foundation started awarding members of the Foundation for dedicated service  towards promotion of accounting education and research in India and abroad.

The Executive Committee considers short resume of outstanding academics in the country and makes its unanimous recommendation to the General Body for honouring the recommended personality by a citation for his or her contribution for promotion of accounting education and research.

(i) Outstanding Researcher Award during 2011-12

Dr. Jyoti Bikash Sarkar was honoured on 10th September, 2011 in the Foundation’s Annual General Meeting held in the Seminar Room of Eastern Institute for Integrated Learning in Management (EIILM)-India at its Hare Street Campus.

Dr. J. B. Sarkar started his academic career in Rashtraguru Surendra Nath College, Barrackpore (under University of Calcutta). Later he joined Department of Commerce, University of Burdwan as Reader and University of Calcutta as Guest Faculty in Commerce and Business Management and served these institutions till his retirement from service. He was Secretary of the Calcutta Branch of the Indian Accounting Association and was instrumental for its phenomenal growth to make it the biggest Branch (till now) of the Indian Accounting Association. He is one of the Founder Members of the IAA Research Foundation.

Dr. Sarkar did his Ph.D. on Capital Structure of Public Enterprises in 1980 from the University of Calcutta under the supervision of legendary Professor of Accountancy, Late Professor G. D. Roy in early1980s. Later, he was widely considered to be an authority in the public sector related matters. He published a large number of research articles on accounting and related matters in reputed journals in India. He also jointly edited a number of research volumes from the Department of Commerce, University of Burdwan. He supervised  20  Ph.Ds. during his academic career (15 under Commerce & MBM Departments, University of Calcutta; and 5 under Department of Commerce, University of Burdwan). He never missed any conference of the Indian Accounting Association and also participated in many of the national conferences of the Indian Commerce Association. He put his dedicated services in organising international conferences of the IAA Research Foundation under the leadership of its Founder President, Late Professor Sukumar Bhattacharyya.

(ii)  Outstanding Researcher Award during 2012-13

Professor (Dr.) Pares Nath Chattopadhyay was honoured on  3rd August, 2013  in the Foundation’s Annual General Meeting held in the premises of the International  Management Institute – Kolkata.

Dr. Chattopadyay was the Director of Research, Institute of Cost Accountants of India (now renamed as Institute of Cost Accountants of India) for a considerable period of time during which he brought out, under his leadership, several useful research volumes on contemporary areas of cost and management accounting. He was also Editor of The Management Accountant and introduced a new journal, Research Bulletin both of which have been continuing with flying colour.  Later, he joined the Department of Business Administration, University of Burdwan and retired from it. Dr. Chattopadhyay also served for a brief period as Visiting Professor in the Commerce Department of North Bengal University before joining the University of Burdwan.

It is difficult keep track of his numerous publications in contemporary areas in the reputed journals in India. He is widely considered to be a prolific writer and an erudite scholar making his contributions not only in the field of accounting but also in many other related areas. He supervised a number of ph.ds. under the MBA Department of the University of Burdwan. Many of his former research scholars are holding high position both in industry and in academic institutions.

The Foundation published in September 2008 a research volume entitled Corporate Misgovernance, authored by Dr. Chattopadyay. It was the result of a research project granted to him by the Foundation in 2005.  He analysed painstakingly many of the intricate areas and issues concerning corporate misgovernance before suggesting “antidotes” in the interest of better corporate governance in India and abroad. The literary style adopted by this scholar of great reputation is helpful in comprehending the facts and the issues in clearer perspectives. This research volume was first of its kind in this sub-continent.

 

(iii)   Outstanding Researcher Award during 2013-14

Professor Kashiram  Sharma, one of the senior-most members of the IAA Research Foundation, and former Professor of Accounting and Dean of P. G. Studies, M. L. Sukhadia University, Udaipur (Rajasthan),  was honoured on 26th July, 2014  in the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation for his contribution to accounting education and research in India and abroad.

Professor Sharma was also the Director of MBA Programme in M.L.Sukhadia University, Udaipur, where he served as Professor of Accounting for several decades. He also served as Professor and Head of Commerce, Mizoram University (2002-2004),
Colombo Plan Professor of Business Administration (1986-87), Tribhuban University, Kathmundu, Professor, Department of Accounting, Auditing and Income-tax, University of Namibia, Namibia (20012-14).

Professor Sharma has outstanding record of doing research. Professor Sharma did his Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, on Small Scale Industries in Rajasthan (A Study of Area Oriented Economic Problems). He completed five major research projects on contemporary areas – 2 funded by the UGC, one by ICSSR, 1 by EU, and 1 by WTO. He supervised 16 Ph..Ds. and numerous M.Phil projects. He authored 8 books and two monograms. He published a large number of articles in reputed journals in India and attended many national and international conferences in India and abroad.

He was Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Accounting (1997-2004). Dr. Sharma is one of the past Presidents of the Indian Accounting Association.

(iv)  Outstanding Researcher Award during 2014-2015

 

Professor P.K.Ghosh, one of the Founder Members of the IAA Research Foundation, and former Vice-Chancellor, North Bengal University , was honoured on 25th July, 2015, in the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation held at IMI-Kolkata for his contribution to accounting education and research in India and abroad.

The Citation presented to him gives in brief his rich background in the following words:

Professor (Dr.) P.K.Ghosh, Jubilee Post-Graduate Scholar (1944-46) and Gold Medalist (1946), Calcutta University; Ph.D. (Delhi University); Exchange Fellow (1966-67), Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, California, USA; former Professor of Commerce, Delhi University, former Vice-Chancellor, North Bengal University (1977-81), and one of the founder members of the IAA Research Foundation, has been contributing immensely to accounting education and research since July, 1947 when he joined as a Lecturer in Surendranath College, Kolkata. He is an eminent educator, an outstanding researcher, and an erudite speaker in many fields including accounting and finance. He has successfully supervised 17 scholars for Ph.D. Degree at Delhi University, authored 17 books and published a large number of research papers in different national and international journals.

The Indian Accounting Association Research Foundation takes pride in giving him outstanding researcher award for his dedicated service towards promotion of accounting education and research in India and abroad.

Professor Ghosh, in response to felicitation, addressed the members for about 15 minutes and kept them thrilled by his eloquence. Even at 92+ he came out with some wonderful observations on some contemporary research topics for the benefits of the members of the Foundation. The Foundation wishes him long life and good health.

(V) Outstanding Researcher Award during 2015-16

Professor L.S. Porwal, one of the Founder Members of the IAA Research Foundation and former Professor of Commerce, School of Economics, University of Delhi, was honoured on July 9, 2016 on the occasion of 26th Annual General Meeting of the Foundation held at J.N.Bose Auditorium of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India for his contribution to accounting education and research in India and abroad. The Citation presented to him gives in brief his rich background in the following words:

Professor (Dr.) L.S.Porwal, M.Com. Gold Medalist (1950), L.L.B. First Class (1953), Ph.D. (1966), all from University of Rajasthan, started his career as a Lecturer in Commerce in the University of Rajasthan in July 1950. He later joined as a Reader in the Department of Commerce, Delhi University in September 1967, became Professor in the same Department and served as its Head (1977-79). He was also Visiting Professor of Accounting, the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA, during 1986-87.

Prof. Porwal is an eminent educator, an outstanding researcher, a prolific writer and an erudite speaker in the field of accounting and finance. He has successfully supervised 12 scholars for Ph.D. Degree at Delhi University, published a large number of research papers in different national and international journals and authored 9 books including three research volumes, namely, Inflation Accounting in a Developing Economy (1985), Capital Budgeting in India (1976) and State of Finance in India – A Case Study (1971). His book, Accounting Theory (Tata Mcgraw-Hill), was first of its kind in India.

Prof. Porwal, a member of National Association of Accountants as well as American Accounting Association, U.S.A., was the Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Accounting (1979-81) and President, Indian Accounting Association (1980-81). He was one of the members of the Advisory Board of Indian Accounting Review and played a very significant role for its improvement by giving opinions on the articles published. One of the Founder Members of the IAA Research Foundation, Professor Porwal participated in a number conferences of the Foundation as a keynote speaker or chair-person.

(VI) Outstandading Researcher Award during 2016-2917

Professor (Dr.) Ranjan Kumar Bal, M.Com. Gold Medalist (1980) and Ph.D. (1993) from Utkal University, started his academic career as a Lecturer in Commerce in Utkal University on 31st March 1983 and became Professor on 31st December, 1999. He has a wide range of experiences as an academic administrator in Utkal University as Head of the Department; Dean of the Faculy; Member, Academic Council; Chairman, Board of Studies; Director, IQAC; Comptroller of Finance (I/C), etc. Besides, he has officiated as Vice-Chancellor (I/C) of Utkal University during 2016-17 on several occasions.
Prof. Bal is an eminent educator, an outstanding researcher and a well known speaker in the field of accounting and finance. He has successfully supervised 28 scholars for Ph.D. Degree and 47 scholars for M.Phil. Degree at the Utkal University, published a large number of research papers in different national and international journals and co-authored seven books in different branches of accounting.
Prof. Bal was the President of Indian Accounting Association (2006-07) and Odisha Commerce Association (2013-14).

As one of the distinguished members of the IAA Research Foundation, Professor Bal has been intimately connected with all the activities of the Research Foundation since inception.
